Separate an idea from a risk plan

A convincing chart setup can still lose. Before entering a hypothetical trade, write down the entry condition, invalidation point, planned exit and maximum acceptable loss. The appropriate exposure depends on your circumstances; there is no universally safe percentage or guaranteed strategy.

A simple position-sizing example

For an educational example, suppose a hypothetical trade has a loss budget of 1,000 currency units and a stop distance that represents 50 currency units of loss per unit traded. Dividing 1,000 by 50 gives 20 units before costs. Actual forex lot sizing also depends on contract size, pip value, currency conversion, spread and fees. Slippage or gaps can cause losses beyond a planned stop.

Risk-to-reward is not a probability

A planned reward twice the planned risk is a 2:1 ratio. It does not mean a trade is likely to win or that a strategy will be profitable. Evaluate losses, costs, execution and a meaningful sample of trades together. Avoid increasing exposure merely to recover a losing trade.

Use a journal to review decisions

Record the market context, setup, planned risk, actual result and whether you followed your rules. Review the quality of your process separately from the outcome of one trade. In Asaan’s courses, chart practice, risk management and trading psychology are taught together. Ask about assignments and mentor feedback in your free demo.
